Huge thanks to our members who painted this beautiful Giving Tree on our community fridge a few weeks ago; it looks amazing!
What are community fridges? Los Angeles Community Fridges is a network of decentralized, independent refrigerators and pantries that provide food and vital supplies to our communities through mutual aid. Where is it located? The fridge is located behind the basketball courts from Gladys Park (2.5 miles away)! How can I help? This community fridge is an excellent way to help out your neighbors in need—and we are giving member points for both donations/stocking up and cleaning/organizing the fridge! Just email us at [email protected] a picture for proof ☺️ CHIP is hosting a tailgate for the last football game of the Fall 2021 season, USC vs. BYU, on Saturday 11/27th before kickoff (7:30 pm)! We will be located at section M4 on McCarthy Quad, so stop by and join us for some fun with other members in CHIP! We hope to see you there!
When COVID hit and health sites closed, CHIP still found a way to serve the Los Angeles community: through providing childhood health education services. Working with local organization School on Wheels, whose mission is to help bridge the educational gap that unhoused students face, CHIP members developed an educational curriculum, assembled interactive experiment kits, created worksheets, and recorded Zoom videos to teach health and science topics to students.
The four topics covered in the Spring of 2021 were oral hygiene, the immune system, heart health, and lung health, with many more in the works for this new semester. Our members had a lot of fun getting their creative juices flowing, and the students had a lot of fun learning and building! Read more about USC CHIP's collaboration with School on Wheels here. We are so excited to update that we will be resuming in-person health screening sites this semester, after a long hiatus due to COVID. We encourage all active members to sign up to volunteer; the three sites currently are Wilshire Vermont (9/24), Concord Huntington Park Apartments (10/06), and Terry Manor (10/14). Please check your emails to sign up! Remember, you must be fully vaccinated and tested three days prior to participate. At these sites, we will be giving free blood pressure and blood glucose screenings to attendees, as well as recommending a nearby clinic to visit. Hope to see y'all there!
We are proud to announce that we are still holding our annual health fair this year virtually! There will be free resources, valuable health information, giveaways, and more. The health fair will include a Google Drive folder with a ton of various flyers with health information from different vendors. There will be giveaway forms hidden throughout this Google Drive. Over Zoom at 3 PM on March 13th, we will be holding kid’s games and announcing the giveaway winners. The giveaway includes ChromeBooks for kids, new bikes for kids, and more. More info to come soon so stay tuned!
Hello CHIP!
CHIP will be partnering with ProjectQ in hosting a community fridge in Chinatown! We will be open on Monday, October 5th at 818 N Spring St. #101, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Feel free to stop by to help out with cleaning/disinfecting, drop off food donations, or check inventory. Members will receive points for stopping by the CHIP fridge or any community fridge in any city, so help out this great cause if you have the time! Hi everyone!
Due to COVID-19, our fall semester will look a bit different compared to past semesters. While we will not be doing in-person health sites, we have many other community service projects for the fall semester, including implementing a Community Fridge, doing online tutoring and science experiments for elementary school children, assembling COVID-19 and health resource packets for our health sites, and more! Please stay tuned, and email [email protected] if you are interested in CHIP this semester and getting involved! If you paid dues and have not received your CHIP t-shirt, please check your inbox
If you have not paid dues, but attended a training session and are interested in joining CHIP, please send us an email for more information. If you are interested in joining CHIP but have not attended one of our training sessions, please be on the lookout for our next training session sometime in February. Thank you! 1/27/2020
